13 thoughtful, offbeat wedding gift ideas

To help jump-start your registry wish list, we compiled the registry trends and emerging registry categories noted by wedding-industry professionals. Some of the gift picks extend far beyond the conventional selections.

Bathroom spas. Though the bathroom is a traditional category in a traditional registry, couples are making the bathroom more of a spa experience, says Naylor, and are equipping it with luxury pieces, such as heated towel racks and fountain shower heads.

If you want to upgrade your bathroom, consider registering with home-decor retailers such as Bed Bath & Beyond and Linens 'N Things.

Blending households' decor and organizers. "Couples are registering for organizers and home decor that blends the styles of different collections and households," says Naylor. This could be a new leather ottoman that ties in the couch and loveseat or it could even be telescopes.

Browse decor shops such as Z Gallerie for household-blending furnishings and general retailers such as Target for organizers.

Charities. Some people who don't want material gifts can register at Web sites such as the I Do Foundation and Justgive.org where their families and friends can make a donation to help a favorite charity. If you want gifts, as well, the I Do Foundation also has a gift registry that donates a percentage of the purchases made to the charity.

If couples want to register with a local chapter of an organization, Becker suggests calling the local branch directly to set it up -- otherwise all the donations will go to the national headquarters.

Besides researching how the registry will work, Naylor suggests staying away from controversial charities such as politically charged ones, as these may offend some relatives and reduce the donation amounts they otherwise would make.
